Hitrekk for iPhone and iPad, version 1.0.
Hitrekk keeps your hikes on a 3D map: import the ones you have done, plan the ones you want to do, record a hike live, and share them. Below is the short version of how each part works. If something does not behave as described, email robin@foursuitstudio.com and include your iPhone model and iOS version.
Importing a GPX file
Tap the orange + button on the map and choose Import GPX, or open a .gpx file from Files, Mail, AirDrop or any share sheet and pick Hitrekk. The app then asks whether the file is a hike you did or a route you want to hike. A hike you did needs timestamps in the file to compute moving time and speed; a planned route does not. Waypoints in the file are imported too. You can select several files at once.
Planned routes
Planned routes are drawn dashed on the map and listed under the Planned tab of the Routes screen. Open one and tap Start this hike to record it live; Hitrekk then shows how far along the route you are, how much is left, and warns when you drift more than a short distance off the line. When the recording is saved the plan is marked done and linked to the hike.
Recording a hike live
Tap + and choose Start Hike (or start a planned route). Hitrekk records your position as a GPX track, with distance, moving time, pace, elevation gain and an elevation profile updating at the top of the screen. A Live Activity on the lock screen and in the Dynamic Island shows the same numbers. Recording continues with the screen off and with other apps in front; iOS asks for "Always" location access once a hike is under way so a recording also survives the app being closed. You can pause and resume, drop a waypoint by long-pressing the map, and stop from the panel at the bottom. If the app is killed mid-hike, the track is recovered on the next launch.
Maps and offline maps
The buttons at the top right switch between the base map, OpenTopoMap, 3D terrain, satellite imagery and the hiking trails overlay. In countries with an open national map (Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, France, the UK) that map is offered as well when a route lies inside it.
To take a map with you, open a route from the bar at the bottom of the map and tap the download button; it says which map it will store and how large it is. Hitrekk stores the tiles for the route plus about one kilometre around it. Stored maps are listed with a Remove button on the same screen. Sweden's Lantmäteriet map needs a free API key from Lantmäteriet, which you enter once on that screen.
Elevation profile and statistics
Tap the route name in the bar at the bottom of the map to open its elevation profile and statistics. Drag along the chart and the matching point lights up on the map. The account menu holds all-time totals across every hike.
Photos
Tap + and choose Add Photos. Photos with location data are placed on the map at the spot they were taken and attached to the nearest route. Photos without location data cannot be placed.
Trips
On the Hiked tab, open the menu, choose Select hikes for a trip, tick the hikes and add them to a new or existing trip. A trip lives under the Trips tab, frames all of its hikes on the map together, and can be shared or exported as a single GPX file.
Sharing and exporting
The share button on a route offers Share Link (a public web page for that hike) and Export GPX. The account menu shares a link to your whole map, and a trip has its own link. Anyone with a link can view it without an account. Exported GPX files include your waypoints and open in any other hiking app.
Signing in and your data
Sign in with Apple, Google or an email address. Your routes and photos sync to your account so they are the same on iPhone and iPad and at hitrekk.com. A copy stays on the device so the app opens without a connection. To delete everything in one go, use Delete all routes from account in the Routes menu; to delete the account itself, email us from the address you signed up with. Details are in the privacy policy.
